College Students: Vote Where You Live

North Carolina law allows college students to register and vote at their college address — without changing their driver's license. Here's exactly how to do it.

You do NOT need to change your driver's license to vote at your college address. These are two separate things under NC law.

1

Decide where you want to vote

You can vote either at your home address (where your parents live) or at your college address. You cannot vote in both places. Choose whichever community you feel more connected to — both are valid.

2

Register at your college address

Go to the NC Voter Registration portal and register using your college address. Use your dorm room, apartment, or off-campus housing address. Your driver's license address does not need to match.

3

Use your student ID or other ID

NC accepts a valid student photo ID from an NC college or university as voter ID. You can also use your driver's license — even if it shows your home address — as long as you are registered at your college address.

4

Check your registration

After registering, verify your registration is active at the NC Voter Lookup site. Confirm your address shows your college location and your district is correct.

5

Vote on Election Day

Vote at the polling place assigned to your college address. You can find your polling place on the NC State Board of Elections website. Early voting is also available at multiple locations in Wake County.
